ASEXUAL FUNGAL SPORES
(click on thumbnail photos to enlarge)

    1. Blastospores - budding yeast.

Observe: Blastospores "budding" from parent cell.

    2. Chlamydospores - corn smut, Ustilago maudis

        Observe:
Free thick-walled, round,
single-celled spores.

"Spines" on outside
of the spore wall.

    3. Arthrospores -
    Geotrichum candida

        Observe:
Barrel-shaped,
thick-walled spores.

Hyphae

    4. Conidiospores

            A. Penicillium conidiospores

            Observe:
Chains of conidiospores formed at the ends of branching hyphae.
Asymmetrical arrangement of chains of spores.

            B. Aspergillus conidiospores

            Observe:
Chains of spores occurring around the rounded end of the hyphae.
Symmetrical arrangement of chains of spores.

    5. Sporangiospores
    - Rhizopus

        Observe:
Rounded sac-like structure (sporangium) occurring at the end of hypha.
                    Sporangiospores occurring in sporangium
